President Chiang Kai-Shek's Message to the Chinese Youth on the 14th Youth Day

April 01, 1957
To the youth of our country:

Dr. Sun Yat-sen, father of the Republic, made national independence, political rights and livelihood in freedom the basic tenets of the Three People's Principles which have been guiding China's national revolution. In our quest for survival and freedom, the Russian imperialists and their Chinese Communist puppets are now the last ones of a long line of enemies. Our war against Communism is therefore the last battle in the course of our national revolution and on its outcome will depend the future of China.

Forty-six years ago today, China's youth as symbolized by the 72 martyrs who were buried at Canton, gave their blood and even their very lives in a' rising tide of revolution which ended in overthrowing the monarchical system of government which had existed in China for 3,000 years. It was their sacrifices which started a new epoch in Chinese history. Since the founding of the Republic in 1911, the patriotic youth of our country, by rallying under the banner of the Three People's Principles, have followed in the footsteps of the earlier martyrs. They fought and won not only over the warlords and monarchists between 1924 and 1928 but also over the Communists who were at one time in occupation of parts of eight provinces in the Yangtze valley between 1929 and 1935, and over the Japanese militarists in the eight year war which raged between 1937 and 1945. All these victories have proved that no enemy, however strong, can stop China's youth once they are inspired by the Three People's Principles and the spirit of the martyrs of Canton. In celebrating this great and glorious day today, the youth of our country are re-dedicating themselves to carryon the same spirit so that we can defeat our last enemy—the Russian and Chinese Communists.

A year ago today, I said to our youth:

"This year we shall see the bankruptcy of Communism in Soviet Russia and the satellite countries." Since last June, there has been continuous unrest in the Communist bloc. In the fire of nationalism lit at Poznan and in Budapest, the crimes of aggression and brutality committed by Communist Imperialism were laid bare before the eyes of the world. It is important that our youth realize that young people were the main force in the anti-Communist movement in these Eastern European countries. Young workers and students were the first to stand up against tyranny. Behind them came women and children who were armed only with knives and sticks. In one voice, they shouted "Kill the Russians!" Even some of the officers and men of the Russian army, I ordered to suppress the revolution in Hungary, laid down their arms or joined the anti-Communist revolutionaries. Their action gave lie to their claim that the Communist Party represents the interests of the proletariat, and that the Communist rule has the support of the workers, peasants, youth, women and soldiers. The Russian massacre in Hungary has served only to arouse anti-Communist sentiments to a greater height among the youth on both sides of the Iron Curtain. Large numbers of former Communists in many parts of the world have since left their party organizations in disgust. Even the youth in Soviet Russia, led by students in the Moscow University, have demanded "an end to the totalitarian rule of the Communist Party" and taken their first steps on the path to an anti-Communist revolution. Over a decade of brainwashing in the satellite countries has failed to uproot patriotism from among the youth in Eastern Europe, and forty years of indoctrination by the Russian Communists has likewise failed to divert human beings from their search for freedom. These facts not only demonstrate the bankruptcy of Communism, but also portend the ultimate collapse of the Communist bloc.

During the past year, our people in the frontier areas in Sikang, Tibet, Sin kiang, Chahar, Suiyuan and Manchuria as well as in such large cities as Nanking, Shanghai, Peiping, Tientsin, Wuchang and Hankow and in interior provinces like Hunan, Kiangsi, Fukien, Chekiang Szechwan, Yunnan, Kweichow and Kwangsi, have risen against the Communists. In fact, almost every city or province on the mainland has been the scene of some kind of revolt. The uprising at Canton on October 10th and the spontaneous demonstration to protect our national flag by Chinese people in Kowloon on the same day had instilled fear into the hearts of the Chinese Communists. Finally, they had to admit their errors and failure. This was tantamount to announcing that the entire economical, cultural as well as social structure in both the rural and urban areas on the Chinese mainland is now in a state confusion. Just listen to the pathetic wailing of Mao Tse-tung on the so called "solving the internal contradictions of the people" and his reiteration of such deceptive slogans as "long-term coexistence" and "a voice for every school of thought," and we can understand how much people in all walks of life have come to hate the traitors for their betrayal of our nation and for inflicting slavery on them. From this we can also see that the Communist puppets are fast approaching the end of their road and, therefore, can no longer disguise their trepidations in the face of the people's mounting wrath.

We must know that the Communists cannot prevent internal contradictions from assuming more serious proportions, nor can they stop short of destruction, no matter how hard they may try. Just as last year was their "year of bankruptcy," this is going to be their "year of collapse." This is the beginning of the end for Mao Tse-tung and his cohorts. They know it, and that is why they have fabricated fantastic "peace rumours" in a desperate attempt to undermine the revolutionary will of our people both at home and overseas and to forestall our impending military counterattack. They vainly hope to be able to pacify the people on the mainland, so as to prolong the life of their regime. I must point out to our youth today: You should never again fall into the traitors' trap. You must realize that in our war against Communism there can be no compromise when it is only half through. This war is going to decide whether our country is to survive or perish. We shall never stop fighting so long as a single inch of our national territory remains under the Russians imperialists' iron heels and so long as a single Chinese re mains under Communist tyranny. Our government will never again make the mistake of accepting the Chinese Communists' surrender and permitting them to get away unpunished for their crimes as we did in 1937.

To the young men and women of our country, I say: We have already succeeded in forming a strong front against Communism and our position is getting stronger than ever before. The days of agony for our people on the mainland will soon be over. When the time comes, I shall lead you back to the mainland in a powerful counterattack to deliver our fellow countrymen there from suffering and to back them up in their struggle against Communist tyranny. The youth of China must stand united under the banner of the Three People's Principles, and hold the torch of national revolution high to greet the holy war of national recovery. This is the way to add another page to the glorious history written in blood by our martyrs of Canton, and this is the way to achieve national independence, political rights and livelihood in freedom for our people. Finally this is also the way to fulfill our sacred task of defeating Communism and rebuilding our country.
